In an interim relief, the Supreme Court stayed the Gujarat High Court’s order, which canceled the admission of a Panipuri merchant’s son to a medical college following a dispute over his caste certificate. With this ban, the student’s hope of getting re-admission to the MBBS course rose.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra said the student was also eligible for admission in several Gujarat government medical colleges as a general category candidate. As a result, the bench issued a notice to the college, the state of Gujarat, the Medical Council of India and the Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, staying the order canceling the student’s admission.

This was the case

Born in Uttar Pradesh, Rathore is now a resident of Gujarat. Rathod submitted a caste certificate for admission to the medical college on August 20, 2018. However, after an investigation, the admission committee canceled the caste certificate. The admission board said this is wrong, as he does not belong to the Teli caste of the SEBC community in Gujarat, rather he belongs to the Teli caste, an OBC category in Uttar Pradesh. With the caste certificate cancelled, the Vadodara Government Medical College, affiliated to MSU, banned his admission in September 2023.
