Guwahati: Sunshine throughout the day on Monday, October 7 brought relief to Durga idol makers in Guwahati as they lifted the plastic wraps to start giving the finishing touches.

Incessant rain for three days forced them to cover the idols with layers of plastic to prevent damage, and to pray for relief in the rain.
“We thank Maa Durga for the sun. We have been making sure that the rain has shown no signs of abating for the past three days,” said Pradeep Paul, an idol maker in Bishnupur.
Durga Puja begins on Wednesday with Sasti and continues until Saturday before culminating in immersion.
“Most of the buyers will start arriving from tomorrow (Tuesday) to collect their orders, so the rain stopped just in time… We will have to burn the midnight oil today to complete the orders. Hope the rain god will have mercy on us in the next two days…” he said.
Apart from the idol makers, the rain also came in the way of road repair work, which can now resume. The government asked to complete all the works by October 9.
Even business suffered as shopkeepers complained of a drop in footfall just before Durga Puja due to the rain.
