Colombo (International Desk) The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that presidential elections will be held in the country on September 21. According to the notice issued by the Election Commission, nomination papers will be taken from the candidates for the presidential election on August 15. The term of office of the President ends on November 17, 2024. According to the constitution, the election of a new President is mandatory at least one month and a maximum of two months before the departure of the current President. Elected in November 2019, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from office in July 2022 due to the severe economic crisis in the country. Parliament elected Ranil Wickramasinghe as President after Rajapakse’s resignation.
