The climate activist marched from Mela on September 1 to be in Delhi on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti.

GUWAHATI: Delhi Police arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and around 150 protesters at the Singhu border on Monday, September 30 citing prohibitory orders valid till October 6. They started an indefinite fast at the police stations where they were held.

Wangchuk’s group was part of the ‘Delhi Chelo Padyatra’, a march that began on September 1, to present demands for Ladakh statehood and other key issues to the central government.

When the group reached the Delhi border, the police acted to prevent them from entering the city, citing an order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora. This order is in line with the state’s recent imposition to limit gatherings of more than five people in areas near Delhi’s borders during Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.

Wanchuk turned to X to express his displeasure, stating, "I am in custody… along with 150 podiatrists at the Delhi border… many elderly and women in their 80s and several dozen ex-servicemen… we were on a very peaceful march to Bapu’s samadhi… in the world’s largest democracy.”

The main objective of the march was to push the central government to resume dialogue on the four-point Ladakh agenda: statehood, expansion of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, timely recruitment processes with a Public Service Commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil. Districts.

The ban orders also come in the wake of heightened communal tensions, upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana and local elections in Delhi. Rajghat and other key areas are under tight security at present.

Following the arrest, a petition for Wangchuk’s release was mentioned in the Delhi High Court, although its urgent hearing was adjourned. Besides requesting the release of the detainees, she also sought directions to allow the Ladakh activists to enter Delhi "in order to raise their demands peacefully".

Unacceptable: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the arrest “unacceptable”, hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and claimed that the latter “will have to listen to the voice of Ladakh”. “Why are senior citizens arrested at the Delhi border for standing up for the future of Ladakh?” He addressed the situation at X, formerly Twitter.
