While Quebec City crews work to repair a broken drinking water pipe, the city is advising some residents in certain areas to reduce water consumption, especially on Wednesday and Thursday.

The city said in a press release Friday that crews must repair the pipe near Chamerolles Street in the Les Rivieres district between June 26 and July 5.

For the first two days, residents in this area must avoid using washing machines and dishwashers and stock up on water “to limit the risk of particles settling in the pipes and the hot water tank of the residences.”

The municipality issued a ban on the use of drinking water for cleaning, watering plants and lawns and filling swimming pools, starting Wednesday at 7 a.m. to “maintain the quality of the drinking water offered to citizens and reduce the risks of episodes of cloudy water.”

The restrictions will be in parts of the following districts and will affect approximately 35% of Quebec City residents:

  • La Cita-Limoilo
  • the rivers
  • Haute-Saint-Charles
  • Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge
  • The town of L’Ancienne-Lorette.

Residents caught washing their cars, filling swimming pools or other prohibited practices will be issued a notice and could face a minimum fine of $1,000.

The municipality stated that regular monitoring will be carried out.

Quebec City workers will also limit water consumption and use, such as street cleaning and irrigation, during the work period.
