My Grandma fought for the other side,
stand against the Soviet Horde,
protect his family, his community and national pride,
artillery pounding on the other side.
A colonel of clear prestige and professionalism,
confirmed the code of soldiers far and wide,
to protect, serve and possibly die.
Maybe a hero, depending on your side.
Hungarians mostly stood against their Soviet Nemesis,
but he also fought on the Western Front,
in the Sicilian campaign and in France as well.
His artillery stopped the British, the Americans and the Canadians too,
Do what every soldier is required to do by oath,
to reach their goal, fight on until the battle is won,
but his heart was at home, with his family plain,
the soldier should never leave their zone.
Returning to his land, the Soviets immediately arrested him,
and by trial he was sentenced to be hanged.
Before his house, he stood with the hangman’s nose tight,
until some Jewish citizens came out with open eyes
declares this man a savior of his kind.
Rich, powerful and high-ranking was,
so with his wife they hid Jewish families.
They were said to have saved many Jewish lives,
and for that, his life was saved,
and to the Gulag it was 20 years.
Live the rest of his life in familiar peace,
away from the hell of war and untold destruction.
He told me his story and pronounced heartily,
that a soldier’s life for future generations should never be,
the horror that destroyed the lives of many was never felt.
With tears in his old eyes, he told me truly,
taking a life takes something dear from you.
If he could live his life over again, he would never be a soldier,
but to live your life freely and most meaningfully.
My Grandfather respected his opponents with pride,
men and women fighting for their families and home.
He raised a glass of wine to his lips with a tear,
toasting all People far and wide
the pride of a soldier was held dear in his heart.
