Speaking at an event in Jalna, Shiv Sena MP Sandifan Bhomer said the importance of consensus and taking the trust of the Muslim community before proceeding with any amendment to the Waqf Act should be stressed.

Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra minister Arjun Hotkar also called for a careful discussion before making changes to the law. According to him, waqf means property donated by Muslims for the welfare of the community. The party should take the Muslim community into confidence to avoid any negative perception. This is a sensitive issue and the government should keep in mind the feelings of Muslims.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kieran Raiju introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill on Thursday. After the opposition parties objected to the provisions in this bill, the government demanded that it be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for investigation. With over 40 amendments, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill proposes to repeal several sections of the existing Waqf Act. In addition, the bill seeks to make far-reaching changes to the existing law. This also includes ensuring representation of Muslim women in the Central and State Waqf Boards. Along with that, people of any religion can be members of its committees. The law was last amended in 2013. Among the opposition parties, the government recommended on Thursday that the bill be sent to the joint parliamentary committee.
