Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Sharad Pawar-led faction on Friday approached the Supreme Court demanding that the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) be given new names and election symbols. In this regard, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sola said that she has requested the Supreme Court to treat both factions of NCP equally. In fact, Sola says that just as his party got a new election symbol, the rival faction led by Ajit Pawar should also be given a new name and symbol.

Lok Sabha member Sula told reporters on Saturday, “NCP (SP) has demanded justice from the Supreme Court.”

what’s the matter

Sharad Pawar moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s February 6 order, which recognized the group led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar as the de facto national Congress party. The Election Commission has also allotted NCP’s election symbol ‘Ghari’ to the Ajit Pawar-led group. The election symbol of NCP founded by Sharad Pawar was ‘Clock’ before partition.

The Supreme Court had earlier said that Sharad Pawar’s name and photographs cannot be used for political gains by Ajit Pawar’s faction. The Supreme Court on March 19 allowed Sharad Pawar’s faction to use ‘Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar’ as its name and ‘man blowing trumpet’ as its election symbol ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the state. The Supreme Court on February 19 ordered that the Election Commission’s order to assign the party name ‘Rashtrawadi Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar’ to the Sharad Pawar faction be continued till further orders.

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narawakar said on February 15 that the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar is the real NCP and anti-defection provisions in the constitution cannot be used to suppress internal dissent. Sharad Pawar founded the NCP in 1999 after his expulsion of the Congress along with former Lok Sabha Speaker P Sangma and Tariq Anwar. In July last year, Ajit Pawar mobilized most of the NCP MLAs and extended support to the BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Eknath Shinde.

What steps have you taken now?

The Sharad Pawar-led faction on Friday demanded the Supreme Court to give new election symbols to the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujwal Bhoyan fixed September 25 for hearing the petition. Earlier, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the Sharad Pawar faction, claimed that he wanted to register the matter immediately in view of the Maharashtra assembly elections.

What did Sharad’s daughter Sola say?

Supriya Sola said, ‘Sharad Pawar is the founder member of our party and he takes all the decisions. NCP (SP) demanded natural justice from Supreme Court.

He said that the court has asked us to use the ‘Trumpet Man’ symbol until the final judgment is given. The same decision should be taken for other NCP factions as well. There is a lot of confusion about the ‘clock’ symbol. That’s why we ask the court to make a decision before the upcoming assembly elections.

Sharad Pawar’s daughter and Member of Parliament in Ramati said that two political parties here are claiming the same election symbol and the court has not given any decision yet, so both sides should be treated equally.
