Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Sharad Pawar-led faction on Friday approached the Supreme Court demanding that the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) be given new names and election symbols. In this regard, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sola said that she has requested the Supreme Court to treat both factions of NCP equally. In fact, Sola says that just as his party got a new election symbol, the rival faction led by Ajit Pawar should also be given a new name and symbol.
Lok Sabha member Sula told reporters on Saturday, “NCP (SP) has demanded justice from the Supreme Court.”

The Supreme Court on February 19 ordered that the Election Commission’s order to assign the party name ‘Rashtrawadi Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar’ to the Sharad Pawar faction be continued till further orders.
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narawakar said on February 15 that the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar is the real NCP and anti-defection provisions in the constitution cannot be used to suppress internal dissent. Sharad Pawar founded the NCP in 1999 after his expulsion of the Congress along with former Lok Sabha Speaker P Sangma and Tariq Anwar. In July last year, Ajit Pawar mobilized most of the NCP MLAs and extended support to the BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Eknath Shinde.

There is a lot of confusion about the ‘clock’ symbol. That’s why we ask the court to make a decision before the upcoming assembly elections.
Sharad Pawar’s daughter and Member of Parliament in Ramati said that two political parties here are claiming the same election symbol and the court has not given any decision yet, so both sides should be treated equally.
