According to Chinese scientists, in their new research, a nap in the afternoon increases a person’s mental performance, sharpens memory and plays an important role in protecting him from mental and neurological diseases such as dementia.

In this study, scientists examined the diet and afternoon sleep habits of more than 2,400 residents of Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an and compared them to their mental health. The results showed that people who were used to taking naps in the afternoon had better mental health and faster memory than others. The state of consciousness of these people was also much better than others and was more fluid than others.

The head of the research team, Dr. Jin Xin Lee, said, “60 percent of the people in our study were used to sleeping after dinner.” These people used to sleep for 30 to 90 minutes. A clear majority of them slept an average of 63 minutes, and they were the ones whose brains were sharper and more powerful than their peers and had the lowest risk of developing dementia and other such diseases.”
