57 companies and manufacturers are responsible for 80% of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement. These companies are involved in fossil fuel and cement production worldwide.
According to an analysis published by the London-based think tank Influence Map, Saudi Arabia’s national oil company Saudi Aramco ranked first among the top emitters, accounting for 4.8% of the world’s total CO2 emissions between 2016 and 2022. In second place was the Russian Gazprom. Carbon Majors is a database of the largest oil, gas, coal and cement producing companies in the world. It helps measure emissions from fossil fuel and cement production and product use.
According to the analysis, most mega-producers have increased fossil fuel production and associated emissions since the Paris climate agreement compared to the previous seven years. 58 out of 100 companies saw an increase in emissions during this period. The highest increase occurred in Asia. 13 out of 15 companies in Asian countries emitted about four percent more between 2016 and 2022 compared to 2009 to 2015.
