“Explosions in Kyiv. Go to shelters immediately,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on social media, hours after several people were reported injured.
Several explosions rang out in central Kyiv on Monday, AFP journalists reported, as air raid sirens sounded in the Ukrainian capital and officials urged residents to take cover.
The explosions rang out around 10:30am (0830 GMT) after nearly a dozen people were injured in a Russian drone strike in southern Ukraine overnight and a fire broke out at a major Russian power station following a drone attack in Ukraine.
“Explosions in Kyiv. Go to shelters immediately,” Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on social media, adding in a later post that the emergency services were dispatched to three districts of the capital.
The head of the Kyiv military administration said that a Russian missile damaged a residential building in the Pechersky district and that the details were being confirmed.
Russia has stepped up airstrikes on Kyiv in recent days, targeting key infrastructure in the wake of deadly Ukrainian bombings of Russia’s border regions.
