GUWAHATI: At least 60 doctors at the Calcutta Medical College resigned on Wednesday, October 9, after the alleged rape and murder of a fellow professional in August. The mass resignation comes a day after 50 senior doctors quit their posts from the RG Kar Medical College, where the incident took place.

Doctors from both institutions cited their decision to retire as an act of solidarity with their junior colleagues, who began a fast-to-the-death protest on Shabbat. The doctors also vowed to take the message of ‘Abhyaya’ – a call for women’s protection and safety at workplaces – to Durga Puja pandals across the city to ensure the issue remains in the public eye during the festive season.

Following the mass resignation, a senior faculty member at the RG Kerr Medical College and Hospital clarified that the doctors will not immediately stop their work and will continue to treat patients for the time being. “Our junior doctors have been protesting for two months and are now on the third day of a hunger strike. Their health is getting worse… Our main goal is to send a clear message to the state administration, calling on them to start discussions with the junior doctors,” said the faculty member.

The mass resignations from Kolkata’s two top medical institutions reflect growing frustration among health professionals at what they see as the government’s inadequate response to the crisis. Among the demands raised by the protesting doctors is the immediate removal of West Bengal Health Minister NS Nigam, accusing him of administrative incompetence and failure to deal with corruption in the department.

They also call for the implementation of systemic reforms, including a centralized referral system for all state hospitals and medical colleges, and the creation of a task force to ensure the provision of basic services such as CCTV surveillance, emergency rooms and bathrooms. for medical staff.

As the protests continue to intensify, the health sector in West Bengal is facing increasing instability, with no clear solution in sight.
