CPI(M) Congress General Secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday, September 12, after a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old. He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi. Yechury had a respiratory tract infection, complications of which led to his untimely demise.

Many pathogens can cause respiratory tract infections. Viruses and bacteria are prominent among them. These pathogens are spread by direct contact with infected individuals or by touching contaminated surfaces. The air quality in most Indian cities is so bad that it makes the infection more serious.

Sitaram Yechury was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 complaining of pneumonia. Pneumonia is usually the cause of respiratory tract infection in the elderly and children. Sometimes its symptoms become very serious and can even become the cause of death.

so today’In the medical record‘I will talk about pneumonia. You will also learn that-

  • Why is it so dangerous for children and the elderly?
  • What symptoms of pneumonia should not be ignored?
  • What tests are done to check this?
  • What are the treatment and prevention measures for pneumonia?

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. It can be caused by bacteria, virus or fungus. In this, the lung tissues swell and fluid or mucus may be produced in the lungs. It is of two types – bacterial and viral. Bacterial pneumonia is usually more serious than viral pneumonia.

Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs. If both lungs are infected then it is called double pneumonia.

Children and the elderly are at greater risk

Pneumonia can happen to a person of any age, but young children and the elderly are at greater risk. The main reason for this is weak immunity. The immune system of small children is not fully developed. While the immune system of the elderly becomes weak with age. Look at the graphics.

Let us understand the points given in the graphic in detail.

  • Young children and the elderly are at greater risk of any infection due to their weakened immune systems. So they are also at greater risk of pneumonia.
  • By the time people reach the age of 65, many types of diseases begin to affect them. Where many chronic health diseases can also occur. Because of these, the body of the elderly weakens and they easily become victims of diseases such as pneumonia.
  • The lung function of very young children and the elderly is weak. So pneumonia affects them more.
  • At these two ages, most of the body parts may get into trouble due to some disease. Therefore, the risk of complications is also higher in case of pneumonia.

Apart from children under 2 and elderly people over 65, there are many risk factors for pneumonia, see:

  • If anyone has any lung or heart disease.
  • Those with neurological conditions that cause difficulty in swallowing.
  • Conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia.
  • People who are in hospital for a long time, especially in ICU or a ventilator.
  • People who smoke.
  • Women who are pregnant.

Never ignore these symptoms of pneumonia

Its symptoms depend on the cause of the infection. Symptoms of pneumonia can sometimes be mild and sometimes they can be very severe. Babies, young children and the elderly may have different symptoms. However, some of its symptoms should never be ignored.

What tests are needed to treat pneumonia?

Based on the symptoms of infection, the treating doctor decides what tests to do to diagnose the lung condition. The condition of the lungs is diagnosed by doing many important tests such as a chest X-ray and a CT scan. Apart from this, a blood test reveals the cause of the infection. Based on this, the disease is cured by giving medicine. Let us see in the graphic which tests are necessary before treating pneumonia appropriately.

what is the treatment for pneumonia

The treatment of pneumonia depends on the cause of its infection. Before treatment, it is determined which pathogen has caused this infection: bacteria, virus or fungus. Treatment also depends on the severity of the infection and symptoms.

  • In case of bacterial infection, antibiotics are given to treat it.
  • Antiviral medicines are given in case of pneumonia caused by a viral infection.
  • If the infection is caused by a fungus, then antifungal medicines are given for its treatment.

What are the measures to prevent it?

There is an old saying in medicine, prevention is better than cure. This means that prevention is better than cure. If certain precautions are taken, pneumonia infection can be avoided. Let us see the important preventive tips in the graphic.
