Raju Bista is the BJP candidate for the second time in the Darjeeling constituency breaking the tradition. Garua Shibir changed the candidate despite winning the hills in the last three Lok Sabha polls. First was Jashwant Singh, second was Surendra Singh Aluwalia and third was Raju Bista in 2019. In 2024, Raju was trusted by the Modi-Shahar team.

Political analysts claim that despite thousands of complaints against Raju Bishlar, Gorkha emotions worked in selecting candidates. Raju himself was confident. On the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting in Siliguri on March 9, he claimed, ‘This time the candidate will not change in the hills.’ That’s what actually happened. There was news within the party that Raju can contest as an independent party if the party does not give the ticket. On the other hand, the name of former foreign secretary Harshvardhan Shringla emerged as a new candidate for the Darjeeling seat.

After attending a series of social events in Darjeeling, Harsh Vardhan directly joined the BJP program in Siliguri. He also attended Chai Pe Pracha at Siliguri Maidan College. Not only this, BJP workers were informed that it has more programs coming up. However, Harshvardhan Shringla, who handled India’s foreign policy for four decades, never wanted to directly comment on Shringla’s candidature. In the end, by turning all the calculations, Rajui set a precedent by getting the ticket for the second time on the mountain.
