In a desperate bid to get the Federal Government to tackle the housing crisis, welfare rights groups have proposed new submarine-shaped public housing blocks, which they say will lead to hundreds of billions of dollars in additional funding.

“The trick is not to tell policymakers they’re houses,” says campaigner Natalie Kusama. “Instead I would say they are high-tech military devices personally approved by the President of the United States. The money will flow immediately”.

It is expected that the plan could net up to $350 billion, which could finance as many as one million new homes. “We will probably have to agree to the flats being designed in the UK, using US technology, built in Adelaide and then transported to where they are needed. But this is the only way we will get rid of the proposal”.

Kusama admitted that the design was inspired by the AUKUS submarine program, but said the two projects were quite different. “These flats will actually be built”.
