President Dr. Arif Alvi on Thursday signed the summary issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to appoint General Asim Munir as the new Chief of Army Staff and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Staff Committee, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.

After weeks of intense speculation and rumours, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided to appoint General Asim Munir as the new army chief and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the chairman of the Joint Staff Committee, and a summary of this outcome was forwarded to the presidency.

However, before returning to the presidency in Islamabad where President Alvi signed the memorandum, he first consulted with former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan in Lahore.

There were rumors that the President might not sign the summary of the new appointments.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the government has several options to get the key summary of the Army Chief’s appointment signed by the President if it is not signed by November 26.

According to the details, Khawaja Asif told the media in the parliament that if President Arif Alvi does not sign the appointment of the army chief by the 26th of this month, the government has many other options.

He said that this matter will be heard again on November 25, but we cannot reveal our plans until then.

He said that if he says something now, the exam paper will come out.

Federal Information Minister Marium Aurangzeb tweeted on Thursday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to use his constitutional authority to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Committee and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir. Commander-in-Chief of the Army in exercise of constitutional authority.

“A summary of these appointments has been sent to the President of Pakistan,” the minister continued.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif tweeted that the recommendation has now been sent to President Arif Alvi. He added, “Imran Khan’s challenge now is whether he wants to strengthen the internal defense establishment or make it controversial.”

The Defense Minister said, “President Alvi is being tested here whether he will follow his political instructions or constitutional and legal advice. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, it is his duty to protect the institution from political conflicts.”
