He was caught red-handed in his Srijangram office after accepting a bribe from a contractor, the board said.

The contractor filed a complaint alleging that Sarkar demanded bribe to clear the pending bills. The contractor objected to the illegal demand and contacted the vigilance directorate, who organized a sting operation to catch Sarkar red-handed.

The board through a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, confirmed the arrest, noting, "Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM caught red handed Ranjit Kr. Sherkar, Secretary, North Salmara Gaon Panchayat, Bongagon District in the office after accepting bribe from the complainant in connection with tender processing".
