Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, major labor organizations submitted their list of demands to the INDI Alliance. They hope that the INDI alliance will include the demands of the workers’ organizations in its election agenda. “All India Trade Union Congress” (AITUC) placed its 27 demands before the INDI alliance. A request was submitted to include them in the election petition. Member of the National Staff Side Council (JCM) and All India Defense Employees Federation (AIDEF) General Secretary C. Sreekumar says the main demands of the workers include returning the ammunition factories to the previous status quo, abolition of NPS and abolition of OPS. These include return to work, ensuring establishment of 8th pay commission, payment of 18 months DA arrears and opening of CGSH hospital/health center in every district etc.

Demand to fill 12 lakh vacancies

The demand from the political parties is to restore the status of arms factories as a government industry by de-incorporating arms factories and transferring them to the Ordnance Factories Board, Sreekumar said on Thursday. Apart from this, implementing the alternative and stronger proposals given by the trade unions to improve strategic armaments factories, filling 12 lakh vacancies in the central government, withdrawing the four anti-employee labor laws passed by the parliament and converting any scheme based on workers as employees, the demands include granting civil servant status and regularizing their services as permanent civil servants. The parliamentary committee also recommended that there should be a CGSH hospital or health center in every district. In the current system, there is a provision for retirees whose pension increases by twenty percent at age 80. For this they have to wait twenty years.

An addition of 5 percent to the pension every five years

According to Srikumar, regarding the pensioners, the parliamentary committee also recommended after 65 years to increase the pension by five percent every five years. Earlier, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) also placed its 27 demands before the INDI alliance. These demands include strengthening the public distribution system by controlling the rise in prices of all essential goods and supplies such as gasoline, diesel, LPG, etc., granting worker status to all employees based on the program and regulating their services as permanent government employees. Guaranteeing a minimum of 200 working days with A wage of Rs 600 in both rural and urban areas and fixing the universal minimum wage at Rs 26,000 are also among the demands of AITUC.

Correction of medical treatment charges in corporate hospitals

Also, the workers’ organizations prominently raised the demand to implement alternative and stronger proposals given by the trade unions for the improvement of the strategic armament factories. De-privatisation in Railways, Defence, BSNL, Banks, General Insurance, LIC, Coal & Mines, Medicines & Pharmaceuticals, Airports, Ports & Harbours, Electricity, Steel, Petroleum, Heavy Engineering & Construction etc. Ensure gender equality in the Armed Forces and the Coast Guard in matters of employment and promotion. Appoint a regulatory authority to determine medical treatment charges in all private and corporate hospitals in Israel.

Restoration of an old pension and the end of privatization

National Movement for Old Pension (NMOPS) president Vijay Bandhu recently also met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and appealed to him to include the issue of restoring old pension and ending privatization in the party’s election manifesto. About a million government employees in the country are included in the NPS. They feel insecure. Vijay Bandhu said in his letter submitted to Kharj, state government employees are demanding to bring back the OPS. There are one million employees in NPS. If together with these workers their families and retired families are also counted, then this number reaches over five crores. Employees believe that NPS is secure and discriminatory. All state employees, in which the community of teachers stands out, oppose this.
