He said, “If they (NIA) go to their homes at night, will the women keep quiet? Will she try to defend herself?
An official in the case said the NIA on Saturday arrested two key conspirators in the 2022 blasts case, amid a mob that attacked the investigating agency’s team.
An NIA officer was injured and a vehicle of the investigating agency was damaged in the attack, a spokesperson of the Federal Investigation Agency said.
The officer said that the NIA team later filed a complaint at the Hoftinger police station.
Banerjee alleged political motives behind the NIA’s action. He called it an attempt to intimidate Trinamool workers. He questioned why the agency was arresting people just days before the December 2022 elections.
The Trinamool Congress chief has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Center of trying to use central agencies to win elections.
Banerjee said, “We want the Election Commission not to become a BJP-run committee, but to work impartially.”
He raised questions about the transfer of state police constables by the Election Commission and asked why officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Income Tax (IT) department were not transferred.
Banerjee said, “NIA, CBI are BJP’s brothers, ED and Income Tax department are boxes providing funds to BJP.”
According to him, the state police ensures law and order throughout the year, but during elections, central forces like BSF (Border Security Force), CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) are brought in.
Banerjee said at the rally, “If you (BJP) have the power, then win the elections democratically. Don’t arrest workers and election agents at my booth level.
He condemned the arrest of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in the alleged land scam and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a case related to excise policy by central agencies.
Banerjee said: “Everyone should get equal opportunities in elections.”
The Chief Minister said why she should implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal when she is providing health facilities to nine million people under her Swasthya Sathi scheme.
“My guarantee is the people,” Banerjee said in an indirect reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal guarantees on various issues.
According to him, “the guarantees of Maa, Mati, Manush are plans for Kasmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, Saboj Sathi and Swasthya Sathi”.
The head of the minister said that there was unrest in Sandashkali regarding the land grabbing issue and the state police and the administration arrested the accused and are returning the land to the villagers.
The BJP has fielded Rekha Patra from Basirhat constituency, where Sandeshkhali is located.
Banerjee accused the BJP’s West Bengal state president and the party’s second consecutive candidate from Balurghat, Sukanta Majumdar, of doing nothing for the people of Bengal and speaking against the release of central funds to the state.
Addressing a rally in support of TMC candidate from Bloorghat, Biplav Mitra, the Prime Minister claimed that those accused of atrocities against women were not punished in BJP-ruled states.
On the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he questioned the BJP’s right to decide on citizenship.
He said, “Who are you (BJP leader) to decide someone’s citizenship, when that person is already a citizen? Why don’t you (BJP) set an example yourself? Why don’t you classify yourself as a foreigner and apply for citizenship under the CAA in the first place?”
Accusing the Modi government of distorting the constitution and distorting the country’s history, Banerjee said, “You (BJP) violated the ideals of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and your people violated the ideals of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar. The statue was broken.”
Referring to the storm that hit Jalpaiguri district, Banerjee said, “Modi ji did not mention the calamity even once during his recent visit to the region, which shows that the BJP is not concerned about the suffering people.”
