GUWAHATI: The National Green Tribunal has ordered an immediate stop to the construction of roads inside Barak Wildlife Sanctuary in Hoban in Assam’s Cachar district. The tribunal issued the order after the National Green Tribunal heard a plea alleging that the construction was carried out without the required permissions under the Hawan (Senrakshan Avam Sambardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980.

The request raised further concerns about MK Yadeva, the Special Chief Secretary in charge of Forestry, who he claims cleared the transfer of forest land without proper approval. This is not the first time Yadeva has been accused of breaking the law when it comes to forests. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Environment revealed that his decision to allow a camp of a commando battalion on forest land in Hailkandi district violates conservation regulations.

The order passed by the NGT bench comprising Justice B. Amit Stalker along with expert member Arun Kumar Verma stated that unless and until there is sanction from the Central Government as required under Section 2 of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, no construction shall take place. Allowed in Barak Wildlife Sanctuary in Hoban while the case is pending.
The NGT has sought responses from the Assam government, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Madaba within four weeks.
