An inmate at the Shepody Healing Center in Dorchester, NB, has died.
The treatment facility is inside Dorchester Penitentiary.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) spokeswoman Sophia Doiron confirmed to CTV News Atlantic that the inmate died on March 30, but did not release any other details.
“Loss of life is always a tragedy,” Doiorn said in an email. “Whenever a prisoner dies in CCC custody, we notify the police and the Coroner’s Office. For privacy reasons, we cannot disclose any personal information about this individual.”
The Shepody Healing Center is located in the medium sector of the penitentiary and has a capacity of 53.
Doiron also confirmed that an inmate was attacked inside Dorchester Penitentiary on April 1.
“The injured prisoner was assessed by members of staff and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and has since returned to the institution. The assailants have been identified and appropriate action has been taken ,” Doiron said.
The organization is investigating that incident.
