This mission will be the first launch of human spaceflight from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Power Station.

The Crew-9 mission will carry two astronauts: NASA’s Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov. Hague, an experienced astronaut with 203 days in space and three spacewalks, will serve as mission commander. This will be his third space flight and his second mission to the ISS. Meanwhile, Gorbunov will make his first space flight as a mission specialist.

In addition, the Crew-9 launch will also be the return trip of astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore, who have been aboard the ISS since June 5 as part of Boeing’s crew flight test. Due to technical problems with the Starliner spacecraft, NASA opted to use SpaceX’s Dragon capsule for their return. Williams and Willmore are expected to remain on the ISS until February 2025, after Hague and Gorbunov complete their six-month mission.

Typically, crewed rotation missions involve four astronauts living and working in space for six months. However, Crew-9 will only have two crew members, as two seats are reserved for Williams and her colleague Barry Willmore.

NASA continues to monitor weather conditions and hardware processing ahead of launch. Crew-9 is expected to arrive at the Kennedy Space Center scheduled for Saturday, September 21.

According to the post, “NASA and SpaceX are targeting no later than Thursday, September 26th to launch the #Crew9 mission to the @Space_Station, with backup dates on Friday, September 27th and Saturday, September 28th.” Joint teams continue to work through pre-launch operations and hardware processing in preparation for the first launch of human spaceflight from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Power Station, while monitoring the weather prior to liftoff. Crew arrival at @NASAKennedy is currently scheduled for Saturday, September 21st. NASA will share more details as they become available.”
