Then where else did Dhoni learn it? Well, that’s where former Indian skipper Santosh Lal’s close friend comes into the picture.
Santosh and Dhoni grew up playing cricket together in Ranchi, and it was from him that the legendary wicketkeeper derived his now iconic ‘Helicopter Shot’.
As the story goes, Santosh, a talented cricketer in his own right, had the unique ability to lift the ball off his legs with an effortless flick of the wrist so powerful that the ball would fly over the boundary.
‘Captain Cool’ Dhoni saw Santosh mastering the skill and hence, took the initiative to learn the same from him.
And well, one might say that Dhoni has definitely done Santosh justice and maybe a bit more, as the knock has become synonymous with the World Cup winning captain.
“He (Santosh) and Dhoni would play endless tennis ball games. Both were working for the Railways,” said Nishant Dayal, an old friend of Santosh in a conversation with the Indian Express.
“Santosh was fearless as a batsman… Dhoni admired his style and Santosh taught him how to play the helicopter shot.
“Over the years, Dhoni may have patented the ‘helicopter shot’, but growing up, there was someone who was always better at it.”
Unlike Dhoni, the unlucky Santosh could not break through the ranks and even reach the national level in cricket.
And in more unfortunate news, the talented batsman and dear friend Dhoni died of pancreatitis in 2013.
Dhoni tried his best to help his dear friend fight the condition, with medical help and even by flying Santosh to Delhi for advanced treatment. But, all his efforts ultimately failed.
