Montreal turns 11 streets car-free this summer Achi-News

This summer, 11 streets in Montreal will become pedestrian-only thoroughfares, city officials announced Tuesday.

According to them, 9.4 kilometers of street have been allocated to pedestrians, “allowing residents and visitors to enjoy local businesses and cultural programs in seven quarters”.

“Since their inception, pedestrian streets have been the lifeblood of Montreal’s neighborhoods,” said Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante. “We know that the development and animation of arteries are essential conditions for improving the commercial experience, which starts on the street.”

This year is the first time that the area near Plaza Saint-Hoover will be free of cars in the summer.

The pedestrian streets in Montreal this summer include:

Mercier-Hochlege-Maizenau

  • Ontario Street East from Pie-IX Boulevard to Darling Street (June 17 to September 10)

Outermont

  • Bernard Avenue between Outermont and Bloomfield Avenues (May 20 to September 30)

Mont-Royal plain

  • Avenue Mont-Royal between the streets Saint-Denis and de Lorimier (May 28 to September 5), as well as between the avenues Saint-Laurent and the street Saint-Denis (May 28 to October 18)
  • East Dolot Avenue between Saint Laurent Avenue and Saint Hubert Street (June 20 to October 14)

Rosemont-le-Petit-Patri

  • Market Jean-Talon between Place du Marché-du-Nord (north and south) from Casgreen and Boulevard Henri-Julien (June 6 to October 13)
  • rue Saint-Hubert between rue Balchas and rue Jean-Talon (July 4 to August 25)

Varden

  • Wellington Street between 6e Avenue and Regina Street (June 3 to September 8)

Will-Marie

  • Saint-Catherine street east between Saint-Hubert and Pepineau streets (May 17 to October 17)
  • Sainte-Catherine Street Ouest between Saint-Laurent Boulevard and de Bleury Street, as well as Clarke Street and de Montigny Street up to the Maison du développement dock (May 1 to October 31)
  • Rue Saint-Denis between Rue Sherbrooke and Boulevard des Maisons, as well as Rue Emery (June 18 to September 17)

Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension

  • Rue de Castelnau east between Rue Saint-Denis and Avenue de Gaspe (May 15 to October 15)

Additional car-free streets are also in the works, officials say, including Avenue Monkland in the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-des-Grasse district, which should be pedestrianized between Giroud and Melrose streets from August 22 to 25.
