GUWAHATI: A 10-year-old girl from Thangshalai village in Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya, reportedly took her own life after her parents refused to give her a mobile phone.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 22, when the girl’s parents reportedly asked her to focus on her studies before buying her a new phone.
Frustrated and upset by the denial, the young girl retreated to her room, where she apparently took her own life by hanging. Her body was discovered later that night, and she was pronounced dead.
According to reports, the local police confirmed the incident and handed over the body to the family after a post-mortem examination.
Earlier this month, a woman from Wakad, Maharashtra, committed suicide after her husband refused to buy her a new phone as well. Alternatively, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death by three youths in Delhi’s Shakarpur area on September 23 after he refused to give them a treat for buying a new phone.
Such heartbreaking cases have raised concerns about people’s mental health and emotional well-being, with experts urging the importance of addressing people’s technology-related distress.
