McGill University students participating in a hunger strike against the Israel-Hamas war have confirmed that their protest has ended.
“We are no longer willing to risk our lives and bodies on hunger strike for the genocidal killing machine known as ‘McGill,'” the post on social media said. “Endless gratitude for all the love and support from everyone over the last few months.”
The group claims that the strike ended on May 6 “on the advice of medical professionals.”
“While they are determined to achieve our goals, the sacrifices made by our hunger strikers exceed what they have to bear for us to be heard,” they wrote on social media. “However, the end of our hunger strike is not a defeat.”
The group mentions that it met with senior officials at McGill University, but “they didn’t care about the hunger strikers, they only deigned to meet with us after the two unrestricted hunger strikers were admitted to the hospital.”
“We must change strategy, refocus and continue to build a collective force strong enough to end the capitalist war machine that is fueling the hourly death of the Palestinian people,” the post said.
The end of the hunger strike comes just over a month after a McGill student was hospitalized while taking part in the cause.
“They told me to get IV fluids because I was starting to get really dehydrated,” Rania Amin told CTV News from her hospital bed at the time. “I was nauseous all the time. I was starting to get to these dangerous levels of hunger.”
The students went on strike on February 19, demanding that McGill University divest what they call its multi-million dollar investments with companies they believe are linked to Israel’s war on Hamas.
McGill’s hunger strike lasted 76 days, according to the social media post.
