DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Monday accused the central government of making Kachataibo Island an election strategy. According to him, the Center is raising the issue of Kachataibo Island because the opposition has raised questions about the border between India and China. Kanimozhi Karumanidhi will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as DMK candidate from Thothukudi parliamentary constituency.

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi is hoping for victory from the Thoothukudi parliamentary constituency

Confident of winning the election from Thoothukudi parliamentary constituency, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi said, “There is a possibility of winning in Thoothukudi. All these years, the island of Kachataibo came to mind only when the opposition talked about the India-China border issue during the elections . He further said that the area around Kachataibo Island and the fishing dispute are in the news even before the general elections. BJP and the opposition are quarreling on this issue.”

Let us tell you that Kachataibo Island is located between India and Sri Lanka in Rameshwaram. This area is used by fishermen from both areas. In 1974, the then central government accepted the island of Kachataibo as Sri Lankan territory under the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Agreement.

What is the Cachataibo Island problem?

All Tamil Nadu governments continued to refuse to accept the 1974 agreement and constantly demanded the return of the island from Sri Lanka. In 1991, a resolution was passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly against the agreement, demanding the return of the island.

In 2008, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, approached the Supreme Court against the Center and appealed to annul the Katchatheevu agreements. He said the two agreements between the countries that gifted Kachataibo to Sri Lanka were unconstitutional. Besides, in 2011, Jayalalitha again took the decision in the assembly.

In May 2022, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, in a function in the presence of Prime Minister Modi, demanded that the island of Kachataibo be returned to India. He said that the time has come to take action in this regard so that the fishing rights of the traditional Tamil fishermen are not compromised.

Vote in Tamil Nadu on April 19

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the DMK-led secular progressive alliance (comprising Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK, AIFB) won a landslide victory in the state, winning 38 of 39 seats. Voting will begin from April 19 in seven phases for 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country.
