Lethbridge College’s 67-year evolution continues as the province of Alberta announces the school’s re-designation as a polytechnic institution, with the aim of providing students with a more practical and industry-responsive education.

The first post-secondary was established as a community college in 1957 and will officially become Lethbridge Polytechnic College on 3 September.

Lethbridge College president and CEO Brad Donaldson said that as a polytechnic, the school’s programs will continually change to meet industry demands and ensure students are “job ready” after graduation.

“There will be programs that have not been offered in the past because they were not needed and we will look at what the needs are here,” said Donaldson.

“Think about the growing need for artificial intelligence, the technological changes in the agricultural sector, and all the support services around that from childcare to other offers that we will provide.”

According to a statement from the province, providing post-secondary education close to home is a key factor in supporting local economic growth.

Alberta is home to four other polytechnic institutions: NAIT in Edmonton, SAIT in Calgary, Red Deer Polytechnic and Northwestern Polytechnic in Fairview and Grande Prairie: the latter two changed from colleges to polytechnic institutions in 2021.
