New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha is Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal made the announcement at the end of the All India meeting on Tuesday. The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) has brought this matter to the notice of the Protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi was sworn in as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday. While taking the oath, he held a copy of the Constitution in his hand, and after reciting the oath, he chanted, “Jai Hind, Jai Constitution”. The Congress won 99 seats among the All India partners. So the Congress leader was supposed to take over as the Leader of the Opposition.
Incidentally, for the first time in the last 10 years, the Lok Sabha is getting an opposition leader. To become the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, an opposition party must secure at least 10 percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. But earlier in 2014 and 2019, no opposition party could get 10 percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. In 2014, the Congress won only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. In 2019, the number of seats increased slightly to 54, but it was not enough to elect anyone to the position of Leader of the Opposition.
