Luxury jeweler Laings has opened one of the UK’s largest watch workshops in Glasgow and we had a look inside.

The first of its kind in Scotland, more than 2,000 watches are expected to be worked at Laings’ new state-of-the-art service center in its first year alone.

From Rolex, Patek Philippe, and TAG Heuer to Longines and OMEGA, the team at the center can work on up to 10 timepieces at any one time.

The space, on Buchanan Street, fits eleven watchmakers, three technicians, three polishers and a final quality control technician. The team is led by service director Serena Gough.

A great deal of care is taken to protect the watches, and Serena said people sometimes find it difficult to let go if they are prized family heirlooms.

The rooms are pressure controlled to prevent any dust or dirt from entering the sterline environment when the doors are opened.

‘When Laings was founded in 1840, it was a company based on the skills of clock making, watchmaking and goldsmithing,’ said Serena.

‘In the present, we continue to invest in the skills, talent, passion and expertise that drive those trades, located in a collaborative and innovative environment.

‘It is a privilege to work alongside our extremely talented team, who are all focused on achieving excellence in the work they do and the precious timepieces they keep.’

The family jewelers have invested more than £1 million in the workplace, which is part of larger plans worth £5m, including opening a new flagship store later this year.

Throughout our journey Serena emphasizes the importance of training the next generation of horologists.

Laings has employed four people who are completely new to the field – one of whom is currently studying at the British School of Watchmaking.

And master watchmaker Ian Anderson, who has more than 30 years of experience, also shares his knowledge.

‘This is a crucial time for us as a business,’ said Stuart McDowell, managing director of Laings.

‘The launch of our innovative service center in the UK marks the latest step in a proud journey of providing the highest levels of skilled craftsmanship and underpins our drive for excellence in servicing and client care across our operations.

‘It is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to invest in our people, to give new life to the ancient art of horology and to ensure its future for generations to come.’
