It has been widely reported that the king is keen to resume some form of public duties, despite his illness, following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis on 6 February.

A statement from Buckingham Palace was released following the monarch’s diagnosis in February.

It said: “During a recent King’s Hospital procedure for a benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a type of cancer.

“His Majesty began a schedule of regular treatments today, during which he was advised by doctors to decline positions in front of the public.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to conduct the business and official paperwork of the country as usual.”

The palace added that the king was “absolutely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to public office.”

The statement continued: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to avoid speculation and in the hope that it may aid public understanding for all those around the world affected by cancer.”
