Washington: US President Joe Biden on Friday called Russia’s referendum a “whitewash” and said the US would never recognize Ukrainian territory as anything other than part of Ukraine. “The United States will never recognize Ukrainian territory as anything other than part of Ukraine,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.
The statement came after Ukraine’s four Russian-occupied regions began voting in referendums on joining Moscow, according to CNN, citing Russia’s separatist leaders. “We will work with our allies and partners to impose additional swift and severe economic costs on Russia.
“The United States stands with our partners around the world — and with every country that respects the fundamental principles of the UN Charter — in rejecting any collateral consequences that Russia may announce,” Biden was quoted in the statement as saying.
Earlier, on Wednesday, at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Biden condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia’s war on Ukraine. Speaking at the UNGA, he said that by invading its neighbor, Moscow had “brazenly violated” key principles of the United Nations Charter.

US President Vladimir Putin says he has tried to “wipe a sovereign state off the map” and says Russia’s plan to organize “fake” referendums in parts of Ukraine is currently “a very serious violation of the UN Charter”.
“Putin says he had to act because Russia was threatened, but no one is threatening Russia, and no one is seeking conflict except Russia,” Biden said. He said Putin has made nuclear threats against Europe, Russia is calling more troops to fight, and the Kremlin is trying to annex parts of Ukraine.
“The world needs to see what outrageous actions they have taken,” Biden said. Biden said Putin had made nuclear threats against Europe, adding that Russia was inviting more troops to fight and that the Kremlin was trying to annex parts of Ukraine. “The world should see the outrageous acts,” he said.
Blaming Putin for the Ukrainian crisis, he said, “The war chosen by one man (Russian President Vladimir Putin) was very blatant.” The US president said Russia’s war was to destroy Ukraine’s right “as a state, as a people”, “plain and simple”, before telling those at UNGA to “make your blood boil”.
“Ukraine has the same rights as every sovereign country. We will stand united against Ukraine and Russia’s aggression. “Just before he invaded, Putin insisted, and I quote, ‘Ukraine was created by Russia’ and never a ‘real state,'” the US president said.
He expressed concern about the mass grave recently discovered in Izyum, which “showed signs of torture. Now we see attacks on schools, railway stations, hospitals.

“No matter who you are, no matter where you live, no matter what you believe — it should chill your blood. That’s why 141 countries came together in the General Assembly to unequivocally condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Biden added. He also said that the US has personally marshaled the support”.
