Referring to the documents released through RTI, Jaishankar said that everyone knows that the agreement he made in secret, he will not accept it in public. DMK and the then central government are responsible for the plight of the fishermen in Tamil Nadu. The issue of the island is often raised in Parliament and has been the subject of frequent correspondence between the central and state governments.

Earlier on April 1, Jaishankar had alleged that the Congress chief ministers had shown indifference towards the Kachataibo island as if they did not care about it and had abandoned the rights of Indian fishermen despite legal opinions to the contrary. He said Prime Ministers like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had described Kachathaibo, which was given to Sri Lanka in 1974 under the Maritime Boundary Agreement, as a small island and a small rock and said this issue did not arise suddenly. There was always a lively romance.
