New Delhi, October 31st: A new English translation of Islam’s holy book has been released by the Delhi-based Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies which aims to present the Qur’an as the earliest generations of Islam understood it.

This is the first major Indian contribution to the English translation of the Qur’an since the popular translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, first published in the early 1930s. With its extensive annotations and appendices, this edition offers a complete introduction to the tenets of Islam.

The translator, the Indian scholar Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, initially began the work as a revision of Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation which, according to him, contains many inaccuracies and mistakes, as well as the use of archaic and multilingual language. The work of Dr. Khan slowly over 11 years to be a completely new translation with over two thousand new annotations and several appendices on the introduction to the Qur’an, a biography of the Prophet Muhammad, The Beautiful Names of Allah, a dictionary of Islamic terms and subject index of the Quran. As such, this new translation of the Quran is a complete guide to Islam.

The translator is a well-known Islamic scholar who studied at Al-Azhar and Cairo universities and obtained his PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Manchester. Along with his command of Arabic, he is also fluent in English and Urdu and has written scores of books in these three languages. He was a senior research fellow at The Muslim Institute in London for about 14 years. He writes and speaks Arabic with native fluency, which put him in a unique position to do such a difficult job.

In this work, Dr. depended. Khan on the most authentic and original Arabic works and the oldest books on exegesis and biographies of the Prophet and the most authentic dictionaries of the Qur’an and Arabic in order to determine the meaning of difficult words, phrases and expressions. terms.

The extensive new annotations have considered the kind of questions that the average Muslim or non-Muslim reader might have when reading the Quranic text. The absence of this method in many translations has led to problems and doubts that the opponents of Islam exploit.

Dr Khan says he has tried to present a translation that reflects as accurately as possible the way the earliest generations of Islam understood the holy text. He believes this new translation is the most accurate version of the holy Islamic scripture in modern, plain English.

The translation is published by Delhi publisher Pharos Media in two editions. One Arabic text has a parallel to its English translation. The other edition is without the Arabic text. The work can be ordered from [email protected], Amazon.in or Flipkart. The translation will soon be published by several publishers in different countries and will also be available on TheGloriousQuran.net, which is under construction.
