A ‘high risk incident’ on 9 Avenue South that happened near a school in Lethbridge on Wednesday afternoon is over.

A Lethbridge police officer confirmed to CTV News on Wednesday shortly before 5 pm that the incident was essentially a weapons complaint that ended with four to five people being taken into custody.

In a media release, Lethbridge police said several people were taken into custody and police found a fake weapon in a south side home.

They added that “there is currently no evidence to support criminal charges.”

At 3:54 pm, police issued a statement asking the public to avoid the area around the 1200 block of 9 Avenue South.

Parents picking up children from Fleet Bawden Primary School have also been asked to use 12ed South Street and go to the roundabout on the west side of the school.

The school issued a release at 4:15 saying that after they were informed of an external threat in the neighborhood by the police at 3:25 pm, they initiated a secure perimeter out of sufficient warning.

During a secure perimeter, school doors leading outside are locked, and students are not allowed to go outside the building.

Once the bus was redirected to the roundabout on the west side of the school, the students boarded it to go home.

There was also a police presence at the school throughout the event.
