The Laver Cup will be an iconic event as tennis legends Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and men’s tennis Big 4 Andy Murray will play together as a team for Europe for the first time since the 2019 Australian Open.
Posting a heartfelt note to Federer after his retirement announcement, Djokovic now hailed the 41-year-old’s impact on the game.
“His impact on the game is huge, the way he plays, his style, effortless, perfect for a tennis coach, player or a tennis fan,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic said that neither Andy Murray nor Andy Murray knew that Federer would hang up his boots after the Laver Cup and now that everyone knows, the excitement of the farewell match will be even greater at the O2 Arena in London.
“Andy and I didn’t know that this was his last match and it was his farewell this weekend, so that makes this event even bigger because he’s one of the best athletes in the game, in any game,” Djokovic added.
Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray are mostly known for their rivalries on court but the four have a mutual respect. The Serbian has beaten Federer in 4 major finals including 2019 Wimbledon, the legendary Swiss star’s last appearance in a Grand Slam final.
Djokovic added that the Laver Cup is a great opportunity for him and others to spend time and get to know each other – something that isn’t possible on tour.
“It’s great that we get a chance to spend some quality time together off the court,” Djokovic said.
“We have team dinners and talk about tennis, sports, life. We don’t usually do that on tour, we have our own teams and families, so it’s very unique,” he added.
