The Meteorological Department issued a final update on Friday. It said that heatwave conditions are expected to continue in parts of eastern India and the peninsula over the next two days. According to the department, the areas where heat waves will be seen include Jharkhand, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha.

Devastation of heat waves in some parts of India

During the last 24 hours, heat wave conditions continued over isolated pockets of North Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Andhra Pradesh Vinam Coast. A heat wave is a state of air temperature which, when exposed, becomes fatal to the human body. It is defined as a temperature range in terms of the actual temperature in the area or its deviation from normal.

What is a heat wave?

A heat wave is considered when the maximum temperature at the station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius or more for plains and at least 30 degrees Celsius or more in mountainous areas. The meteorological department advised people to avoid exposure to heat, wear light, loose cotton clothes, cover their heads, use hats or umbrellas.

On Thursday, maximum temperatures were between 40-42 degrees Celsius over many parts of Vidarbha, Telangana and Rayalaseema, parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Marathwada, coastal Andhra Pradesh Vinam and north interior Karnataka and isolated places. West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Central Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, East Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Tamil Maximum temperatures. In some parts they are 3-4 degrees Celsius above normal.

Rain and storm activity is expected to continue

Further, the rainfall and storm activity is likely to continue over the northeastern part of the country till 9 April 2024. Another Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from 10 April 2024. Under its influence, light rain/snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh on April 5-6.
