A hairstylist working in the Bengali film and television industry attempted suicide by setting herself on fire after losing her job. The hairdresser accused some of his colleagues of preventing him from getting a job. The police said that before the suicide attempt, the employee recorded and wrote a note. In doing so, he held 10 people responsible for his plight. Subsequently, the Federation of Cinema Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, the premier organization of technicians and managers, sought an investigation into the allegations.

The police said that the woman set herself on fire by pouring kerosene oil on herself in her home, but family members rescued her and admitted her to a government hospital. The hairstylist claimed that I should not be part of any project independently. Long wait for approval. The technical union didn’t even give me any project. It put tremendous financial pressure on me. My family has been kind of hungry for a while now. That’s why I have to take my life. She took out 10 co-workers on their behalf, holding her accountable for her condition.

It was reported that the woman was fired from her job for three months by the technicians’ body on May 1 for indiscipline. After that she was free to work on any project. The discretion of the production house is to choose them for each project. Expressing sympathy with the woman’s move, actress Sarala Mitra wrote on Facebook that she had not been given assignments for months. Who will she turn to for justice?

Actor Sudipta Chakraborty said the woman has been in the industry for 22 years. She started as a flight attendant and later became a hairdresser. I will stand with him and oppose any injustice. Let it heal first. The Directors Association of East India (DAEI), the representative body of film producers, also raised its voice in support of the hair stylist. The hairdresser survived and was released from hospital, but will require long-term counseling at home, the DAEI said.

The association stated that there is no need to repeat this event again. Let us all unite against such people in the industry. Swarup Biswaz, president of the Federation of Cinema Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, said he heard about the incident. A committee that will be established to examine claims and complaints about discrimination will examine the matter. If the allegations are found to be true, we will take appropriate action.
