Nestled in the Nilechal hills of Guwahati resides a temple of a powerful deity – ‘Maa Bagalmukhi’. The Maa Bagalamukhi temple is one of the ten Mahavidya temples (a group of ten Tantric deities in Hinduism), located around the Kamakhya temple. Unlike the other goddesses worshiped in the Nilhal Hills, Maa Bagalmuki is depicted and identified with a yellow or golden color. The color symbolizes control and submission, reflecting her divine power to overcome enemies and challenges. She is successful in legal battles, in overcoming obstacles and challenges. Devotion to her, especially during times of illness and disease, legal proceedings, accidents, quarrels, enmity and other unexpected trials and turmoil, has worked wonders. Hence it is believed that seeking divine intervention of Goddess Bagalmukhi in times of distress brings much peace.

Known as Pitambari in northern India, she sits on a golden throne with pillars decorated with various jewels and has three eyes which symbolize that she can impart ultimate knowledge to a devotee. Maa Bagalamukhi is one of the ten forms of the Devi, symbolizing a strong, primordial feminine force.

Baglamukhi temple is about 10 kilometers from Guwahati city. Taxis, autorickshaws and buses offer convenient transportation to the temple. For anyone who wants to go to the temple in Galamuki after visiting Kamakhya Temple, he can easily walk a stretch of almost 500 meters on the road, which is convenient and easy.

If we talk about the history of Maa Bagalamukhi Temple, the locals believe that its establishment predates historical records. King Naranarayana of Koch built the temple in the 16th century.

Architecture and features

The Maa Bagalamukhi temple is a one-roomed structure with a shikra (tower) topped by a golden amalakat (suphim). Stone carvers have decorated the temple with intricate designs, and inside, the stone idol of Bagalmukhi sits serenely on her lotus pedestal. The temple is located in a secluded place on the Nilachal hills before the Kamakhya temple, and devotees can easily walk up to Maa’s temple in Galamuki to reach it.

The main ritual performed at the Maa Bagalamukhi temple is the puja (worship) of Goddess Bagalamukhi. A priest chants mantras and prays to the deities, performs the puja. Devotees also offer flowers, fruits and other offerings to these goddesses.

The main festival celebrated at Maa Bagalamukhi temple is the Navratri festival. Navratri transforms the temple into a dazzling display of lights and flowers, echoing with the chants and rituals of special pujas. Devotees from all over India come to the temple to pray to the Goddess Bagalmukhi.

The Maa Bagalamukhi Temple is a significant place of worship for Hindus, especially those who follow the Tantric tradition. Devotees flock to the goddess in Galmuki, seeking to have their wishes granted, to remove obstacles and to protect against enemies. Since the temple is located in a peaceful place on the Nilkal hills and blessed with plenty of trees and abundance of nature, a visit to this temple makes the devotee feel renewed and refreshed. The atmosphere in the temple is peaceful, making it an ideal place for meditation and prayer. One can find devotees sitting here for hours and meditating while soaking in the divine blessings of Maa Baglamochi.
