Like Maharashtra, this festival is celebrated by different names in other states too. In some places this festival is celebrated as Ugadi, in some places as Ugadi and in some places as Chetti Chand. On this day, the New Year is welcomed by setting up a Gudi at home.
The word Gudi means flag or sign. Padwa means the first day of Chaitra month. On the day of Gudi Padwa, a Gudi is set up on the house with a bamboo stick, cloth and copper or silver utensils. Gudi is decorated with neem leaves, flowers and mango leaves. On this day, processions are taken from town to town. Cheers are made. This festival is also celebrated with great enthusiasm by making sweets. On this day everyone wishes their relatives and loved ones.
