India’s new postal law comes into effect from Tuesday. The Government of India has issued a notification to give effect to the provisions of the Postal Act, 2023. The purpose of this Act is to create a simple legislative framework to provide citizen-centric services, banking services and benefits of government schemes to the last man in the society, thereby improving the comfort of life.

The law abolishes provisions such as special authorizations for the collection, processing and delivery of papers to facilitate doing business and the ease of life. No punitive provisions were established in the law to promote the spirit of maximum governance and minimum governance. It provides a format for setting standards regarding the use of objects, identifiers, and codes. This Act replaced the Indian Postal Act, 1898.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Communications, the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 was repealed with the implementation of the Postal Act of 2023.
