Singh, 91, who served as prime minister for two full terms, was the first prime minister outside the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Throughout his tenure, Singh played a central role in shaping India’s economic landscape and social welfare framework. His leadership was instrumental in enacting a number of rights-based legislation and implementing transformative reforms such as the direct benefit transfer system and the Aadhaar initiative.
Singh entered the Upper House in October 1991, four months after becoming the Union Finance Minister in June 1991. He represented Assam for five terms in the Upper House and moved to Rajasthan in 2019.
“We live in times largely shaped by you. The economic prosperity and stability we enjoy today is built on the foundations laid by you along with our former Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna Shri PV Narasimha Rao. The current set of leaders who have reaped the benefits of your work are unwilling to credit you because of political biases “, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge posted on X.
