Assembly elections are due in Maharashtra later this year. Earlier, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey joined the Congress on Thursday. A 1986-batch retired IPS officer had earlier also come on the radar of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2022. He was arrested in a money laundering case related to alleged illegal wiretapping of National Stock Exchange (NSE) employees.
Sanjay Pandey was given party membership by Congress Mumbai unit chief and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad at the South Mumbai office.
What did Pandey say when he joined the Congress?
Pandey described himself as a person of secular ideology and said that apart from the Congress, no other political party follows a secular ideology. According to him, “I don’t join any party, but a family. I wanted to join the Congress in 2004 itself, but I didn’t get a chance.”
Expressing confidence that the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) would form the government in Maharashtra after the assembly elections, Pandey said that under MVA rule, common citizens would not have to fear anything. “As a retired police commissioner, I can explain how false cases were registered against me,” he said.
In what case was the investigation conducted?
Fendi had to face an investigation in connection with one of his girlfriends. However, he was later granted bail. He served as Acting DGP of Maharashtra and then as Commissioner of Police of Mumbai in the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government. He was accused by the BJP of conspiring with the MVA government to implicate its leaders in false cases.
