A “massive water main break” in Calgary created chaos in several neighborhoods and left a large section of a major city artery closed in both directions.

Hazardous flood conditions closed Montgomery 16th Avenue NW Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, multiple neighborhoods were left with no or low water flow.

Transport Calgary posted to the X social media platform (formerly Twitter) shortly after 7 pm about the flooding along 16th Avenue NW

The city later confirmed that it was dealing with an “extensive water main break” and was still evaluating the extent of the impact.

Around 7:30 pm, a resident of nearby Bowness called CTV News Calgary and said she and her neighbors were having problems with their water at home.

No water or trickling water, he said.

West Hillhurst residents told CTV News Calgary similar – very low to no water pressure in their homes.

At least one resident on Eau Claire’s west side said the same.

Police say they have received several calls to 911 about water issues, and that people should call 311 unless it is an emergency.

The Calgary Fire Department said it would issue an emergency alert Wednesday night because of the 911 situation.

As of 8 p.m., 16th Avenue NW was closed eastbound at Sarcee Trail and westbound at Home Road, according to Calgary Transportation.

Fire officials say that several connecting roads have also been closed.

According to fire officials, by 10pm, the water to the main pipe had been shut off, but work to re-route it was continuing.

The road closures were not expected to be lifted and motorists continue to be advised to avoid the area.

No injuries as a result of the flooding had been reported at the time of writing this report.
