The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to launch the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). For this, a notification of amendment to the National Highway Fees Rules, 2008 has been published. According to this, now toll tax will soon be collected through GPS in the entire country.

With the introduction of the GNSS system, the process of paying and collecting toll tax will become much easier for the drivers and the government. Now to pay toll, drivers will not need to stop their vehicle at the toll plaza and pay through Fastag or manually.

so today need news I will talk about what is GNSS? You will also learn that-

  • How will this system work?
  • What benefit will this give drivers?

Expert: Tutu Dhawan, Auto Expert (New Delhi)

Question – What is GNSS?

answer- GNSS is a satellite unit, which will be installed in vehicles. Until now, toll tax is paid manually or via Fastag at toll booths. Because of this, many times the drivers have to wait for their turn in long queues at the toll plaza, but with the introduction of the GNSS system, the drivers do not need to stop at the toll tax. Your toll tax will be automatically deducted from satellite. This will save drivers time. Now a separate dedicated GNSS lane will be made in the toll plaza.

Question – How does the GNSS toll system work?

answer- In order to operate the GNSS system, vehicles will be fitted with an on-board unit (OBU) or tracking device. Like Fastag, OBU will also be available on the government portal. With this, tax will be collected according to the distance covered by the vehicle every day. The special thing is that traveling up to 20 kilometers on National Highway or Expressway every day will be tax-free for owners of private cars equipped with GNSS. No toll tax is collected from them for this. Toll counting will start from the 21 kilometres. Payment under the GNSS system will be made just like the current Fastag, which will be linked directly to your bank account.

Question- What is the difference between Fastag and GNSS?

answer- Fastag and GNSS systems are meant to help pay tolls, but there are some key differences. Understand this from the graphic below.

Question – Has the GNSS system been implemented throughout the country?

answer- The GNSS system was trialled as a pilot project on the Bengaluru-Mysore section of National Highway 275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of National Highway 709 in Haryana. Apart from this, there is currently no dedicated lane for GNSS anywhere in the country. Once all vehicles are fitted with GNSS units and all lanes are equipped with GNSS, all toll booths will be removed from the roads.

Question- Will Fastag end now?

answer- No, for now the collection of toll tax through Fastag and cash will continue in hybrid mode. Initially, dedicated GNSS lanes will be built in the toll plaza. So that vehicles with a GNSS system can pass without stopping. Gradually more lanes will be built under this system.

Question – Are there any disadvantages to a GNSS toll system?

answer- Car expert Tutu Dhawan explains that the GNSS system is completely satellite based. Therefore, some problems may be seen in this. Such as-

  • In this regard, a signal problem may arise if the vehicle is in the tunnel.
  • In case of bad weather due to rain or fog, there may be a network problem.
  • The GNSS system will track the movement of the vehicle, which could cause privacy issues for drivers.

Question: What impact can a GNSS toll have on revenue?

answer- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) currently collects toll revenue of about Rs 40,000 crore annually. This is expected to increase to 1.4 trillion in the next two to three years after GNSS is fully implemented.

NHAI aims to integrate this system with the existing Fastag installation using a hybrid model. Where Radio Frequency Identification System and Global Navigation Satellite System will be implemented. There will be GNSS lanes in the toll plazas to allow GNSS equipped vehicles to pass without stopping.
