In Bollywood, Farooq Sheikh is remembered as an actor who made his mark among the audience in plays and parallel cinema as well as in professional cinema. , Amrahali was born in Baroda district. His father, Mustafa Sheikh, was a prominent lawyer in Mumbai. Sheikh was the eldest of five siblings.

After his education from St. Mary’s School, Mumbai, he completed his law degree from St. Mary’s College. Xavier, Mumbai and Siddharth College. He practiced law with his father for a few days. But he could not succeed in the field of advocacy. After failing in the legal profession, Farooq Shaikh turned to theater and enrolled at the Pune Film Institute. During his college days he dabbled in acting and stage plays and this is where he met his future wife, Roopa. His two daughters are Sana Sheikh and Shaista Sheikh.

He used to speak in very neat Urdu and his writing style was also very good. Many film dialogue writers used to correct the language and expression of their scripts with Farooq Sheikh. His taste in classical Urdu poetry was very high. He often hummed the poems of Wali Dikni, Ghalib, Mir, Momin, Faiz, Makhdoom Mohiuddin and Majaz.

Farooq Sheikh came to Mumbai to make his mark in the film industry as an actor in the 70s. He struggled here for nearly six years. Everyone kept reassuring him, but no one gave him a chance to work. Then Farooq Sheikh got a chance to work in the Indian independence film ‘Garm Hawa’ in 1973 and this is where his film career began. He was paid 750 rupees. for working in this film. So, the entire film was based on actor Balraj Sahni, but with this film, Farooq Sheikh was able to make his name known to some extent among the audience.

After that, he got an opportunity to work in the great director Satyajit Ray’s film Chess Ke Khiladi, but it did not bring him much benefit. Farooq’s Ki Ghastam Ka star shone with director Yash Chopra’s 1979 film Noori. The success of this film, adorned with excellent songs, music and acting, made not only him, but also actress Poonam Dhillon a star.

The song ‘Aja Re Aja Re Mere Dilbar Aja’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the film still entertains the audience. In the year 1981, the important film of Farooq’s film career was released. Based on the famous Urdu novel by Mirza Hadi Raswa, he played the role of Nawab Sultan who falls in love with Amra and Jaan. He played his role so seriously that the audience has not forgotten him even today. The timeless songs of this film are still on the tongue of viewers and listeners. In the same year, another highly successful film from Farooq Shaikh’s film career, Chashme Baddoor Pardah Seeman, became popular. Farooq’s acting got a new color in this movie directed by Sai Paranjbe. Before this film, it was believed that he was only good at playing serious roles, but with this film, he won the hearts of the audience with his brilliant comic acting. In the year 1982, another important film of his film career came in Bazar Parda Simeen. Directed by Sagar Sarhadhi, this film featured legendary characters from art films like Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah opposite him. Despite this, he managed to attract the attention of the audience through his role.

In the year 1983, Farooq Sheikh once again got an opportunity to act in the film Sai Paranjabe Katha. The story of the film depicted a race between the modern tortoise and the rabbit, where he played the role of the rabbit while Naseeruddin Shah played the role of the tortoise. He played a somewhat negative role in this film, but still managed to win the hearts of the audience.

His original exposure to films came from parallel or experimental cinema. He worked with directors such as Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Harikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta.

He has worked with more or less well-known heroines of art films. During Farooq Shaikh’s film career, his pairing with actress Dipti Noel is quite popular. The pair first appeared together on the silver screen in the 1981 film Chashmebaddoor. After that, the duo also won the hearts of the audience in Kisei Ke Na Kehan, Kahani, Ek Baar Chale Aao, ‘Katha, Ranbarangi, Dashti’ and ‘Tell Me O God’ together. M. Farooq has also done several films with Shabana Azmi, including director Sagar Sarhaddi’s ‘Lullaby’, Kalpana Manta’s ‘Ek Pul’ and Muzaffar Ali’s ‘Anjuman’.

In the world of Hindi cinema, Farooq Shaikh is among the select few actors who pay more attention to the quality of the film than the quantity. Considering this, he acted in about 44 films in his film career spanning four decades. His famous films include Amraojan, Tofan Aur Noori, ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’, ‘Chasham Badoor’, ‘Sath Saath’, Club Sixty, Shanghai, Lahore, Biwi Ho To Esi, Sagar, Mere Saath Chal, Bazar, Kise Se Na Keha, Films like Rangbangi, Salmi, Dasbi, Khel Mohabbatein are included. In the year 2010, he was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film ‘Lahore’. In recent days, he acted in the 2013 hit movie Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.

The 1987 film Bivi Ho Toh was the last film of Farooq Sheikh’s film career as a hero. In this film he worked with actress Rekha. In the 90s, his acting in films dropped significantly due to a lack of suitable roles. After the film Mohabbatein in 1997, he stayed away from the film industry for almost ten years.

In the 90s, Farooq Shaikh turned to the small screen considering the audience choice and hosted a popular TV show “Jeena Asi Ka Naam Hai”. Apart from this, he acted in a number of serials including comedy serials like Chamtkar and Jee Mantriji and entertained the audience with his excellent acting. Farooq Sheikh resumed acting in films in 2008 after a gap of almost eight years. He remained associated with films until his death ie on 27 December 2013.

Farooq Sheikh, who charmed the audience with his brilliant, serious, funny and charming acting, died on 27 December 2017 at the age of 65. The memory of Farooq Sheikh will always live in the hearts of his fans.
