External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who represented India at the SCO Council of Heads meeting, on Tuesday highlighted the need for better connectivity for India to unlock its economic potential. He insisted on “fair market access” and said that was the only way forward. Jaishankar also said that Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor will act as catalysts to improve connectivity and fully utilize India’s economic potential.

“He represented India at the just concluded SCO Heads of Government meeting. Underlining the need for better connectivity in the SCO region built around the interests of Central Asian states,” Jaishankar tweeted.

This is the 21st meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG). The meeting focuses on the organization’s trade and economic agenda.

“The Sabahar Port and the International North South Transport Corridor will unlock the economic potential of this region that can be implemented. Connectivity projects must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states and respect international law,” he said, ANI reported.

During the meeting, Jaishankar also spoke about Mission Life launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It aims to replace the prevailing ‘use and dispose’ economy with a circular economy, he said.

Jaishankar condoled the loss of lives in the Morbi tragedy.

Heads of SCO member states also met for a summit attended by Prime Minister Modi in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on September 16. The meeting adopted the Samarkand Declaration and called for member states to enhance SCO activities and effective development.
