ECI orders transfer of district magistrates and superintendents of police in four states Achi-News

GUWAHATI: In a move aimed at ensuring a level playing field in the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued transfer orders to non-commissioned officers serving in key leadership positions such as District Magistrates (DM) and Superintendents of Police (SP) in four states: Gujarat, Punjab, Odisha and West Bengal.

Additionally, the commission directed the transfer of SSP Bathinda in Punjab and SP Sonitpur in Assam due to their family connection with elected political representatives.

The decision, taken after a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, is aimed at maintaining the integrity and impartiality of the election process. According to the directive, all the respective state governments have been directed to immediately transfer officers who are not covered from their current posts as DM and SP/SSP, with immediate effect, and submit a compliance report to the commission.

The police officers to be transferred include SPs of Chhota Udaipur and Ahmedabad Rural Districts in Gujarat, SSPs of Pathankot, Fazilka, Jalandhar Rural, and Malerkotla Districts in Punjab, DM of Dhenkanal and SPs of Deogarh and Cuttack Rural Districts Odisha, and DMs of Purba. Madinpur, Jhargram, Purba Bardhaman and Birbum districts of West Bengal.
