GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken action against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi for her recent allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On April 5, 2024, the commission issued Atishi a show cause notice regarding her allegations that the BJP tried to recruit her into the party, according to media reports.

In a statement, the Election Commission asked Atishi, who also serves as a minister in Delhi, to substantiate her statements regarding the alleged poaching attempt by the BJP, with valid evidence. The Supreme Electoral Body set a deadline for Atishi to respond until April 8 at noon.

The announcement emphasized the fact that the public tends to believe the statements of political figures. The Election Commission emphasized the importance of ensuring factual accuracy in statements of this type, especially since the veracity of Atishi’s claims was disputed.

The message was addressed directly to Atishi, stating: "…You are a minister in the National Capital Territory of Delhi government and a leader of a national party." It urged her to provide a detailed response to the matter.

Atishi had previously claimed on April 2 that the BJP had approached her through an associate, offering her party membership. She claimed that the BJP had warned her of possible legal consequences if she refused to join.

Her remarks prompted a response from the BJP’s Delhi unit, with Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva confirming that the notice was defamatory of Atishi. The notice demanded a public apology from Atishi for her allegations against the BJP.
