Guwahati: Durga idol makers of Guwahati are very worried as they keep the unfinished idols wrapped in layers of plastic to save them from the rain. The one prayer on their lips is for the rain to stop so they can complete the idols.

Since rainy conditions directly affect the hallmark of craftsmanship, artisans fear that it may harm the quality of idol creation in the long run. “Rain affects the art,” artist Malkit Nagar told G Plus. “If we can’t put the idols under the sun, it affects the quality of the painting. As a result, the idols are not glazed the way we want them to be.”

He went on to share that orders are not affected by the sudden rain, but delivering them on time becomes a more difficult thing to do. “In heavy rain, it is difficult to transport them in vehicles. We hope for clear skies in the coming days.”

As the last tide of the monsoon sets in this week, artisans fear that prolonged wet weather could dilute their business with customers. Currently, they are relying on improved weather conditions to complete all orders and make deliveries.

The latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department predicted rain in Guwahati till October 4.
